It's All Yours (Relaxers)

So for those of you who have grown tired of hair drama and are just trying to get to the point where you can walk around with a head full of your own beautiful and glorious hair, well I've got the place for you!!! Hair It Is, located in Norwalk, is owned by two sisters, Rose & Paula, who I swear have the magic touch. When you walk out of there your hair will actually move at the slightest hint of a breeze! No need to worry about your hair being over greased from too much Duddly Press N Curl or too much Super Hold Spritz. If you are looking for a place where you can finally obtain that healthy, growing mane you've always wanted then this is it!

I happened upon them because I kept running into one of their clients whose hair was always ridiculously beautiful. Everytime, I saw her I would just stare in envy and try to hold back all the jealousy inside. One day I just got tired of looking at her and I just asked her where she got her hair done. I made an appointment for the next month and the rest is history.

So if you've liked what you've heard so far and want to book an appointment then you need to note the following. They are definitely booked solid on Saturdays. If you want a Saturday appointment then expect to wait at least 2 weeks to get in (they are not as busy during the week so try a Tues or Wed if you have the time). They tend to run a little behind schedule, but they do have staff that only does shampoo and prep work, to help them get to as many heads as possible. So basically you shouldn't be there for 4 hours on a Saturday, but be prepared to be delayed. Second, because they are very good and also an African-American salon you are going to pay African-American prices. So if you are used to going to the Haitians or Dominicans just be prepared for the stickershock. Last time I went, I got a relaxer and trim and treatment for $80 (not including tip). Yes, I said $80, but when you walk out of there you will feel like a Million bucks so it is soooo worth it. Also, it's important to mention, that after you wrap your hair the next day it will look even better than the day before. I swear it's the gift that keeps on giving so don't freak out over the cash outlay.

I also know that they are very good at color, weaves and all the trimings, however, I was so impressed with their work on my "natural" hair that I haven't even graduated up to the next level there yet. So if you do decide to go, and I hope you do, be sure to post and let me know about your Hair It is experience.

PS: Both sisters are great so just make an appointment with whoever can take you first

Weavalicious

So ladies if you realize that you need to step up your weave game or your boyfriend is throwing hints at you about getting your hair done then you need to memorize the following three names: Cecelia, Tamara and Ronesha! Walking around town with a style created by any of them will cause complete strangers to go into automatic Cardiac Hair Envy Arrest - I kid you not!! On any given day I can sit in the chair of any of these stylist and walk out looking like I got my hair done at the same salon as Mary J. and that's not bad considering we live in Connecticut!

You can find Cecelia, or Ceil, as her clients call her, at Lane's Hair Salon on Wall St. in downtown Bridgeport. Lane's is conveniently located next to John's Street Beauty Supply which makes the trip downtown even more advantageous. Ceil, specializes in bonded or sewed in weaves and will do any style you want. All you need is to bring in a picture and chances are she can recreate it. I have had her do 12" straight weaves, layered weaves, curly weaves with flat twists, long weaves with bangs, two toned weaves, braided and bonded weaves, just to name a few. She definitely is a miracle worker and I can't even tell you how many weaves of mine she has done - my guess is more than 30 easily. She also did my hair for my wedding so you know she must be good! Obviously, Saturdays are her busiest days and she doesn't take appointments so I recommend going on a weekday. The other drawback is that she is the only stylist in the salon. However, she does work on Mondays which is a rarity these days and she does stay late on Thursday and Fridays. Also, just as a side note, she cuts hair EXTREMELY well, so if you have a style that is somewhat modern she is your girl!

Tamara & Ronesha both work at Ultimate U in Bridgeport near Boston Avenue. This is an extremely busy salon, but they work fast and they have shampoo girls to speed up the process. I have had plenty of weaves done there, at least 5, and I always get asked for their phone numbers. If you can get an appointment with either of them you will leave very very happy! There prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is great so if you want your hair done right you can feel comfortable going there!

Best Wigs in Town

So for all my wig lovers out there I know you know how painful it is to have to deal with CT hair supply stores. Compared to the Dirty South, Connecticut is definitely failing in the Wig Game. However, all is not lost. Finally, I found a store that has an above average selection of quality wigs at decent prices. Sassy Beauty Supply (Not Sally's Beauty Supply) on Chapel Street in New Haven is the spot. I have bought more than 5 wigs there in the past year alone and I have always left there with a feeling of Mission Accomplished!

They carry "Signature" brand wigs which I swear by!! The texture is great and the style and look of their wigs don't make you feel like your a grandmother. Also, they look wonderful on and they don't have that waxy overly synthetic shiny look. My first purchase was a blonde Farrah Fawcett look (style name Banana) which I would have never picked out for myself. However, Christina, their dedicated wig fitter, recommended it for me and I was BLOWN AWAY!!! I have even gone back and got the same wig in a different color.

They also carry Beverly Johnson and a bunch of other brands. They have a huge selection and Christina knows her stuff. She has sat with me and my friends for hours as we try on different wigs and teaching us the ins and out of wig care and styling. So if you are in the market for a new wig then make this your first stop, my guess is that you won't be dissapointed!
